hospita supplementary hospital insurance benefits
For greater comfort in hospital
hospita supplementary hospital insurance offers you additional benefits during a hospital stay. Whereas compulsory health insurance only covers basic hospital care, supplementary hospital insurance extends these benefits and offers you more comfort (e.g. twin or private room instead of multiple occupancy room) and more choice (free choice of hospital throughout Switzerland, sometimes free choice of doctor). But you also benefit from hospital insurance beyond a hospital stay, for example hospita covers the costs of emergency transport and contributes to spa treatments and home help.
Benefits under hospita hospital insurance
You can find a detailed overview of the hospita supplementary hospital insurance benefits in the benefit overview. Please also note the General Terms and Conditions of Insurance in accordance with the VVG and the Special Terms and Conditions for supplementary hospital insurance. The insurance can only be taken out if you are resident in Switzerland.
Basic insurance only covers the costs of inpatient treatment in the general ward (multiple occupancy room) of hospitals on the cantonal hospital list. hospita supplementary hospital insurance extends your choice to all recognised hospitals throughout Switzerland and offers you the option of staying on a semi-private or private ward. Some hospita options also offer a free choice of doctor.
With hospita flex, you decide which ward you would like to stay on when you’re admitted to hospital. For the higher ward, you contribute to the costs with an excess – but in return you benefit from lower premiums than with purely private or semi-private insurance. Basic insurance generally covers the costs of emergency hospital treatment abroad – but with restrictions. With supplementary hospital insurance, you can make sure you don’t have to pay high costs – especially for stays outside the EU/EFTA. Your hospital insurance will cover the costs up to the same amount and for the same hospital ward as in Switzerland (see above under “Hospital stays”).
hospita increases the limited basic insurance benefits (50% with maximum amounts) to 100% unlimited.
Please note: The statutory cost share is incurred for the portion from basic insurance.
Basic insurance does not provide support for home help. hospita offers this benefit if your health, home and family circumstances require it.
If prescribed by a doctor and a hospital stay can be avoided or shortened as a result:
hospita general | up to CHF 20 per day, max. CHF 280 per calendar year |
hospita semi-private hospita flex |
up to CHF 35 per day, max. CHF 490 per calendar year |
hospita private hospita |
up to CHF 45 per day, max. CHF 630 per calendar year |
hospita global |
up to CHF 55 per day, max. CHF 770 per calendar year |
Benefits are doubled if the insured person is responsible for caring for at least one child.
Birth
Basic insurance covers many benefits related to pregnancy and childbirth – but with certain limitations. For example, there is no free choice of doctor and hospital and only the stay in a general ward is reimbursed for the days after the birth. However, can you really imagine being with other new mothers and babies in a multiple occupancy room …? You also have to limit your choice of maternity clinic to those on the hospital list. What supplementary hospital insurance offers:
- In hospital: after giving birth in hospital, you benefit from a twin room (semi-private ward) or a private room (private ward) with supplementary hospital insurance – depending on the insured option. The free choice of doctor and hospital also applies in accordance with the hospita option selected. The family room is also particularly useful for the time after the birth – see rooming-in.
- In the maternity clinic: would you like to give birth at a maternity clinic that is not on the hospital list of your canton of residence? hospita covers the following amounts in this context:
hospita general |
90% of the costs, max. CHF 1,000 |
hospita flex hospita semi-private |
90% of the costs, max. CHF 2,000 |
hospita private hospita global |
100% of the costs |

Your child is sick or has had an accident and you have to go to work? No problem. If your child has taken out supplementary hospital insurance with Sympany, you can have them looked after by a specialist. Sympany contributes towards this with
up to CHF 30 per hour, up to CHF 600 per calendar year
This benefit isn’t covered under basic insurance.
Basic insurance only pays for hospital stays for one person who is ill or has suffered an accident and not for family members.
-
Rooming-in: if a child or parent has to go to hospital and the child is not yet able to stay there alone or at home, this puts some families in a difficult situation. hospita contributes to the cost of staying with the child in the same hospital room or offers one parent the option of accommodation outside the hospital.
-
Family room: many new parents want to spend the first few days together as a family. After an inpatient birth, hospita enables the accompanying parent to stay in a family room.
hospita covers up to CHF 100 per day for both benefits.
